It was dated exactly one week ago. The same day he had started sixth grade. The day Vernon died. Gabe began to weep. He took the paper and joined Guppy, who lay squeezed under the desk. Gabe wrapped his arms tightly around her neck and coiled himself into as small a curl as possible. He rocked a long time with her, his face buried in her coat. Then hetook a pencil from the wooden holder and wrote this message:

Dear Smitty,

I was thinking maybe you miss Guppy

and maybe we could all live together, you,

me, and Guppy.
